During the Francoist dictatorship, Basque was banned from official discourse, education, and publishing. It was even illegal to register newborn babies under Basque names. Luckily, since the 1960s, the trend has reversed, and education and publishing in Basque began to flourish.

The Basque language is spoken by almost 800,000 people. 93.2% of Basque speakers live in the Spanish area of the Basque Country, and the remaining reside in the French portion. The trend in the last decades shows an increase in the number of people who can speak the Basque language. Over the previous 25 years, the number of Basque speakers almost duplicated. According to the statistics, 55.4% of the population between 16 and 24 spoke Basque in 2016, compared to only 22.5% in 1991.

How many people speak Basque?

Linguists distinguish between 5 Basque dialects, aside from its standardized version. These dialects, known as Biscayan, Gipuzkoan, Upper Navarrese, Navarrese–Lapurdian, and Souletin, take their names from the historic Basque provinces but are not limited to the province boundaries. They are so distinctive and divergent that Basque speakers with different dialects find it difficult to understand each other. The standardized version, Euskara Batua, was created so that  Basque could be easily understood by all its speakers in education, mass media, and literature.

Are there regional varieties within Basque?

Throughout its millenary history, the Basque language has absorbed words and structures from other languages. The standardized version, Batua, has five distinct vowel sounds, just like Spanish: a, e, i, o, and u. In Basque, the vowel length is not phonemical, meaning that the length of a vowel doesn't change the meaning of the word. Vowels are pronounced clearly and crisply. The "rr" consonant sounds like a trilled "r", similar to the one in Spanish. The letter "x" is pronounced like "sh". Unlike Spanish, the "g" is always pronounced like the g in go, even before e and i.
