Slovak language, which is Slovakia’s official language, is very closely related to Sorbian, Polish, and Czech languages of Germany. Slovak is written in the Roman alphabet, and there are also traces of the language found in 11th to 15th-century Latin documents, proving how rich the history of the language is. This West Slavic language that belongs to the Czech-Slovak group is spoken by around 5 million people as their native language. It is also one of the European Union’s official languages. Aside from Slovakia, the language is also spoken in Ukraine, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, and the Czech Republic. The country also has strict regulation of the use of Slovak and anyone who uses it incorrectly can face a fine or penalty. In recent centuries, the language has had various changes and expansions because of the influence of other languages such as German, Hungarian, Latin, English, and Czech.

How many people speak Slovak?

There are three Slovak dialect groups namely, Western, Eastern, and Central. The Western dialects are quite similar to the Moravian dialects of the Czech region, while the Eastern dialects are quite similar to the Bohemian Czech dialect. This may be because there are no sharp linguistic differences between the two languages, although Slovak is known to be more phonetically conservative compared to Czech. Slovak has noticeably kept the long syllabic r and l, as well as a series of diphthongs. The language also did not develop the distinct ř Czech sound.

Are there any dialects of the Slovak language?

It can be challenging for non-native speakers to understand a Slovak voice over, but once you learn to pronounce all of its letters, reading and understanding Slovak will come easy. Slovak follows certain rules when it comes to pronunciation. Le, ne, de, and te, and other letter groups are pronounced softly, so it becomes l’e, ňe, d’e, and t’e. Not only that, some of the pronunciation are also continuous, and a number of the letters are omitted. Consonants are divided into three groups namely neznelé párové, znelé párové, and znelé nepárové. There are also numerous letters that can be pronounced in a lot of ways. For example, v has three different pronunciations which are v as v in words like voda, v as u in words like stav, and v as f in words like včela. Some prepositions are also pronounced differently such as s, so, k, and ku. Notably, these are not omitted when used with personal pronouns such as vami, and mne, among many others.
