We love a good list of podcast topics! And when you go browse what’s out there, a good list is what you get. If you can think it, there’s a podcast about it. When you’re thinking about what to focus your podcast on, think about what’s out there already, what’s missing, and what you do best. Read on, my friends!
We love podcasts
We love podcasts! And so do a lot of other people. Podcasts have become a huge medium for information and part of the reason is they are easy to produce and easy to listen to. The key is finding your niche and finding your audience.
Check this out from our Bunny Studio Library:
Are you interested in baking, true crime, racial equality, enneagrams, politics…you can find it in a podcast. And if you have a deep interest in it and a knack for conversation, you can host a podcast.
In other words, you can do this. You just have to narrow down your topic.
Remember writing that thesis statement in middle school? You had to clearly state what that paper was going to be about. It had to let the readers know what was ahead, and it couldn’t be too broad or too narrow. You had to have room to encompass all of your ideas but not so much room that it was broad and vague. That’s similar to figuring out which of the many podcast topics you’re going to focus on. See, you did learn something practical and useful in middle school!
Podcasts are the perfect medium for, well, everything.
Some of the most popular podcast topics for 2021
Some people want to jump in right where the people are. They look towards the popular podcast topics and feel comfortable stepping in and joining the big topics. If you want to go this route, find that little corner where you can make it unique and bring listeners in. Don’t be a copycat. But by all means, give it a go where the audiences are. Let’s take a look at some of these topics…
This article shares some great podcast topics that are hot in 2021. We’ve had a wild year so there’s a lot to talk about!
Culture podcasts
We all know it’s been an eye-opening year and it’s time to spread awareness and create global communities with no injustice. A podcast, believe it or not, is a great medium for this. Because you can share honest perspectives, it’s a great way to get fresh information out there to someone who may not have thought about things that way. For the listener and the podcaster, this is a powerful medium. Here are some of the big shows in this category:
- Bill Gates and Rashida Jones Ask Big Questions
- What Would The Aunties Say?
- Pod Save the People
These all touch on some sort of cultural topic, from race to growing up to existential questions regarding the things around us. If you have a unique perspective on culture or something interesting to bring to the table, this may be the podcast category for you.
Interview podcasts
Maybe you don’t have that interesting personal perspective, but you have a great knack for talking with people and sharing their unique perspectives. The interview podcast is a great format because it’s ever-changing offering a fluid format. You can switch up your guest to keep your show relevant and current. Or, you can choose your podcast topics and interview experts in the field or even everyday people. Here are some to check out for inspiration:
- Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations
- Table Manners
- How to Fail
These topics have a wide range but that makes this category exciting. All you have to do is think of a common thread and invite your guests. With the virtual nature of podcasting, it’s easy enough to do, too.
Health and well-being podcasts
Clearly, this is the time for health and well-being. Women’s Health Magazine shares this spot-on explanation of health and well-being in our current world:
A seismic shift hit 2020 (to say the least) and reverberated through all of us. It threw our priorities and goals and day-to-day habits into a high-speed blender. The topsy-turvy time also offered up an opportunity to reset, embrace the unexpected, and figure out how to keep going. Would 2019 you recognize the 2020 version?
Maybe not, but it’s okay. Out went packed race corrals and after-work happy hours. In came pure joy, sweating in unfamiliar ways, and treating your mental health with real TLC. Resettling into the new world was a bit scary at first, but now: The silver linings are everywhere.
Combine health and wellness with the trend of podcasts, and you’ve got one of the great podcast topics to focus on. We all appreciate trying to get in the best state we can be in, and most of us are up for listening to how to set and meet our own personal goals.
Here are some of the hot shows in this category:
- Happy Place
- Wellness Mama
- The Ultimate Health Podcast
Comedy Podcasts
Maybe true crime will never go out of trend, but comedy is making its way up the podcast charts. Perhaps after 2020, we all need a good laugh. If you have a great sense of humor, a witty banter, or can make light of some heavy topics in an enriching kind of way, perhaps this is your genre. There’s always a fine line with comedy – you want to make people laugh and see a new perspective without being offensive. The lovely thing about comedy is that it’s everywhere. No matter what your topic may be, you can laugh. Even true crime. Check out A Very Fatal Murder if you need validation of that. Here are some other noteworthy podcasts in the comedy corner to check out:
- Mortified
- My Dad Wrote a Porno
- You Made it Wierd
We all need a laugh. Give this podcast category a go if you think you can make us giggle.
True crime podcasts
Okay, no list of podcast topics would be complete without true crime. It’s here to stay as we all are a bit transfixed with the dark side of humanity. From the groundbreaking Serial to the newer The Orange Tree and Redhanded, there are plenty of true crime podcasts to choose from, but they are just…good. We love a true crime podcast because it allows us to theorize, piece things together, and play detective for a few hours. We can be transfixed by the unimaginable and then go about our mundane day-to-day. Yeah, there’s just something about true crime. Here are a few more to check out if this is your thing:
- Son of a Hitman
- Someone Knows Something
- Morbidology
If you have a knack for research, a great storytelling nature, and a thirst for the underbelly of society, give it a go. You might be the host of the next great true crime show.
The Unique Podcast Categories
Maybe none of these fit your style, or you have an idea that can’t wait to try out, though it’s a bit different. Go for it! Maybe your podcast is about brewing that perfect cup of tea or writing college essays. You’d be surprised that it’s probably not the only one of its kind, but you may not have a forest of similar podcasts to break through. Remember, there’s very little completely original stuff no matter what medium you’re in, but you can take a new perspective, a new corner, or a new voice. Don’t be afraid to be who you are and share what you love. That’s what it’s all about anyway. You don’t have to be just like the other guys.
Here’s a bit of advice from our article on podcasting brainstorming:
The key is coming up with podcast ideas that are narrow enough to bring in specific listeners but broad enough to not exclude anyway. The idea should be focused yet expansive to stay informative without being repetitive. You’ll want your audience to be excited enough about your podcast to share it with others.
Starting your own podcast
It’s really not that farfetched. Plenty of people with a mic and a computer create a podcast. And many of these shows grow in popularity, making their mark in the podcast community. Once you’ve decided on one of the podcast topics, think about some podcast advertising and how you can get a little help. You may have a lot of fun with this; you can be the spokesperson for some of your favorite products and services.
Make sure you do a great job with editing after your recording. If you need a bit of help, let us know here at Bunny Studio. We know it can be a bit of a tough job sometimes. but the better quality your show is, the more listeners you’ll keep. We can also help you with logos, music, cover art, and any other aspect of your podcast. Remember, each component has a role in making your podcast more marketable, shareable, and engageable. You take care of the content, and maybe we can take care of the rest.
Then you have to get it out there. Look at some of the different platforms for podcasts, like Spotify and some smaller ones like Buzzsprout and Captivate. Once you’ve published your podcast, keep it moving. Engage with your listeners, give them a place to engage, and keep producing content. How exciting is this!?
The big takeaway on podcast topics
Maybe you’ve already got your idea and you just want to see where it falls into all of the podcast topics. Maybe you need a little inspiration or you want something completely new. Whatever the case, do a little research, have a little fun, and create something awe-inspiring. You’ve got this!
